Uruguay claims the world’s longest carnival, and its heart beats in candombe — the Afro-Uruguayan drum calls that, every February, bring drummers, dancers and old characters of colonial Montevideo through the streets of Barrio Sur and Palermo in the Desfile de Llamadas.

Uruguay’s entry in this atlas is the Desfile de Llamadas, the candombe parade held every February during the carnival in Montevideo, which runs from mid-January to late February and is considered the longest carnival in the world. Candombe itself was inscribed on UNESCO’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
Each February Montevideo’s candombe troupes parade through Barrio Sur and Palermo — flags, moons and stars, dancers, the old healer and the colonial housekeeper, broom-bearers sweeping away bad luck, and at the back at least thirty-six drums beating out the city’s African heritage.
