Higan is a Buddhist observance for the dead lasting seven days around each equinox, twice a year. The midpoint is a national holiday. Not an event to attend.
چه روی میدهد
Higan (彼岸) is a seven-day period that falls twice a year, around the vernal equinox in spring and the autumnal equinox in autumn. It runs from three days before the equinox to three days after it. The first day is higan no iri (彼岸の入り), the entry into Higan; the middle day is the equinox itself, the chūnichi (中日); the last is higan-ake (明け), the end.
The middle day of each Higan is also a national holiday, but the holiday and the observance are not the same thing. The Act on National Holidays gives Vernal Equinox Day as a day to praise nature and cherish living things, and Autumnal Equinox Day as a day to revere ancestors and remember those who have died. Those are single days. Higan is the week around them.
The name is Buddhist. Higan means the far shore — the other side — set against shigan (此岸), this shore. The observance is a calendar notation of Buddhist origin, conceptually linked to the day when light and dark are equal.
This is a household and cemetery observance rather than a public event, and this entry does not describe how it is kept. The archive has not found an institutional source for what people actually do during Higan — what is brought, what is done at a grave, what is expected of anyone present. That material is easy to find in guides and much harder to find from an authority, so it is not written here. If you are not part of a family observing it, this is not an occasion to attend. It is recorded so that a visitor in Japan during those weeks understands what is happening around them.
The dates below come from the published national calendar and exist only for the years it has published. There are no dates beyond that and none are estimated.
چرا اهمیت دارد
Higan (彼岸) is not an occasion for visitors to attend. It is kept at home and at family graves, and the autumn holiday at its centre is defined in law as a day for revering ancestors and remembering the dead. For an archive built for visitors, Higan is a necessary reminder that a living practice can be recorded without being recommended.
It is also the archive’s clearest example of an observance anchored to an astronomical event rather than to a fixed date. Higan is a calendar notation of Buddhist origin, now understood as the three days before through the three days after the vernal or autumnal equinox, seven days in all. The equinox can be computed for any year, but the day it officially falls on is fixed by a gazette published the February before; the printed calendar gives only the first day. Higan is therefore precisely known for the near future and, by design, unknown beyond it.
This entry does not provide a visitor protocol. The structural calendar source used here says nothing about what people do during Higan and nothing about cemeteries, so the archive does not treat it as an occasion to attend.
