Takayama Matsuri

Takayama Matsuri is two festivals in the mountain town of Takayama: Sannō Matsuri on 14–15 April and Hachiman Matsuri on 9–10 October. Each has its own shrine and floats.

Takayama Matsuri is one name for two festivals, six months apart, in the old castle town of Takayama in Gifu. The spring festival, Sannō Matsuri (山王祭), is the annual rite of Hie Shrine (日枝神社) and falls on 14 and 15 April. The autumn festival, Hachiman Matsuri (八幡祭), belongs to Sakurayama Hachimangū (櫻山八幡宮) and falls on 9 and 10 October. They are not two halves of one event: each is a different shrine’s festival, in a different part of the old town, with its own floats and its own neighbourhoods behind them.

The floats are called yatai (屋台): twelve appear in the spring festival and eleven in the autumn, and they are not the same floats. Nationally, the yatai are designated an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property, and they carry the UNESCO intangible-heritage listing for which the festival is known abroad. Floats first appear in the record in connection with the autumn festival in 1718; the festival itself is placed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. On the opening evening, the yatai are hung with hundreds of lanterns and drawn through the old town.

The floats enter the written record with the autumn festival in 1718, and the society that maintains them today places the festival’s beginnings in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Keeping them in repair, and bringing them out on the same fixed days every April and October, is work the neighbourhoods do themselves.

  • Litter. Use a bin where there is one or carry your rubbish with you, and separate cans, glass and plastic bottles into the right recycling bins.
  • Enter private property, including farmland.
  • Take large luggage into crowded spaces.
  • Ignore posted manner signs. The tourism agency publishes a pictogram set covering locally posted prohibitions — blocking walkways, cutting in line, eating while walking, using a selfie stick, going onto train tracks — and these apply where they are displayed.

National guidance rather than a rule for any one festival: a responsible traveller does not take photographs without permission, and is asked to be considerate of their surroundings when taking them. Some places post signs prohibiting selfie sticks.

Crowds gather at popular places and in peak seasons. The national advice is to plan around them — visit on weekdays, early in the morning or at night — and to avoid sightseeing during commuter rush hours, when local people are travelling to work and school. Using a luggage-storage service, a locker or a courier keeps your hands free in crowded places.
