On the last Saturday of July, Rotterdam holds a Caribbean carnival in a Dutch city. Costumed groups and sound trucks take the centre for the street parade, and around a million people come to watch a festival that the Netherlands put on UNESCO's list in 2023.
A Caribbean carnival in a northern city
The Zomercarnaval began in Rotterdam in 1984, brought by people with roots in the Dutch Caribbean — Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire — and in Suriname, and it has taken in Cape Verdean, Brazilian and West African groups since. It is now the largest street festival in the Netherlands, and the country nominated it successfully for UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023.
The weekend has a shape. The Battle of Drums brings percussion bands against each other; the Queen Election picks the year's carnival queen; and the street parade, the straatparade, takes the city centre on the Saturday. Groups walk in costume behind their own trucks, and the judges score them as they pass.

Visiting with respect
Good to know
- The costumed groups have made their outfits over months and are being judged as they pass. Let them have the road and photograph them from the side.
- This is a carnival with Caribbean and Cape Verdean roots in a Dutch city. The music, the food and the language along the route are part of it, not decoration on it.
- The parade is free to watch from the street. Grandstand seats are sold separately.
Avoid
- Do not step into the parade to dance with a group unless you are invited in.
- Do not touch the costumes. Feathers and beadwork are fixed by hand and a knock ruins the line of a piece.
Stay safe
- Around a million people come to a city centre of this size. Agree on a meeting point and keep children within reach.
- Pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common in Dutch crowds, often by groups who work by distraction.
- It is high summer with little shade along the route. Carry water.
