イタリアの祭りは、何世紀もの規則に支えられた町の劇です。シエナでは地区どうしが鞍なしの競馬で競い、ヴィテルボでは高さ三十メートルの塔を百人の男たちが肩でかつぎ、ヴェネツィアでは町ぜんたいが仮面をつけます。

イタリアの大きな祭りの多くは一つの都市のものであり、その最も古い共同体が担っています。シエナの十七のコントラーダ、ヴィテルボの聖ローザの担ぎ手たち、ヴェネツィアの人びとです。どれも宗教の祝いと町の誇りを結びつけており、いくつかは何世紀のあいだに中断され、禁じられ、また復されてきました。
ヴィテルボの聖ローザの塔は、肩でかつぐ巨大な構造物の行列としてノーラ、パルミ、サッサリとともにユネスコの代表一覧表にまとめて記載された四つのうちのひとつです。
