タイは四月のいちばん暑い日々に水をかけ合って伝統の新年を祝い、十一月には満月の下、川に灯りを流します。どちらも、より古い暦の太陽と月にしたがう祭りです。

タイは1940年から1月1日を公式の新年としていますが、伝統の祭りはいまも古い数え方にしたがいます。ソンクラーンは四月に太陽が牡羊宮へ入るときにあたり、ローイクラトンはタイの太陰暦十二月の満月にあたります。
どちらもこの国でとりわけ愛されている祝いであり、同時に一年でもっとも移動が多い時期でもあります。
