Die meisten hinduistischen Feste folgen einem lunisolaren Kalender, weshalb ihre Termine im gregorianischen Jahr von Jahr zu Jahr wandern. Die indische Regierung veröffentlicht jedes Jahr die amtlichen Termine der wichtigsten Feiertage, und die Termine dieser Seiten stammen aus diesen Listen.
Indien ist außerdem das Land dieses Atlas, in dem die örtliche Praxis am weitesten auseinandergeht: Dasselbe Fest kann in Kalkutta, in Mathura oder in Tamil Nadu ganz verschieden gefeiert werden. Die Seiten sagen, wenn ein Brauch einer bestimmten Region gehört.
