A maioria das festas hindus segue um calendário lunissolar, de modo que as suas datas se deslocam em relação ao ano gregoriano de um ano para outro. O Governo da Índia publica a cada ano as datas oficiais dos principais feriados, e as datas destas páginas vêm dessas listas.
A Índia é também, entre os países reunidos aqui, aquele em que a prática local varia mais: a mesma festa pode ser celebrada de maneiras muito diferentes em Calcutá, em Mathura ou em Tamil Nadu. As páginas dizem quando um costume pertence a uma região determinada.
