Les grandes fêtes de l’Inde suivent la lune. Holi colore la fin de l’hiver, la Durga Puja fait de Calcutta une ville d’art et Diwali illumine la nuit la plus sombre de l’automne — tandis qu’au nord-est les peuples nagas se rassemblent chaque décembre à Kisama.

La plupart des fêtes hindoues suivent un calendrier luni-solaire, de sorte que leurs dates se déplacent d’une année grégorienne à l’autre. Le gouvernement de l’Inde publie chaque année les dates officielles des principales fêtes, et les dates de ces pages viennent de ces listes.
L’Inde est aussi, de tous les pays réunis ici, celui où l’usage local varie le plus : une même fête peut se célébrer de façons très différentes à Calcutta, à Mathura ou au Tamil Nadu. Les pages précisent quand une coutume appartient à une région donnée.
