Brasil

Perayaan Brasil membentang dari sekolah-sekolah samba karnaval Rio hingga Amazon, tempat seluruh kota mengikuti arca kecil Bunda Maria yang terikat pada tali sepanjang 400 meter dan dua perkumpulan lembu bersaing dalam warna biru dan merah — semuanya berakar pada tradisi Portugis, Afrika dan masyarakat asli.

Banyak perayaan besar Brasil menyatukan kesalehan Katolik dengan tradisi Afrika, masyarakat asli dan Portugis. Karnaval datang bersama pemukim Portugis dan menyerap irama samba yang dibawa orang Afro-Brasil; Círio de Nazaré mempertemukan iman dengan budaya dan masakan Amazon; dan bumba-meu-boi, dengan kematian serta kebangkitan seekor lembu, tumbuh dari kehidupan orang-orang yang diperbudak dan para pekerja desa.

Dua perayaan dalam atlas ini tercatat pada Daftar Representatif Warisan Budaya Takbenda Manusia UNESCO: Círio de Nazaré, dicatat pada 2013, dan Kompleks Budaya Bumba-meu-boi dari Maranhão, dicatat pada 2019.

In a town in the Brazilian Amazon, two rival ox associations — blue Caprichoso and red Garantido — turn the story of the bumba-meu-boi into three nights of arena spectacle, with giant sets, drums, Amazonian legends and a whole town divided by colour.
