A Etiópia conta o tempo pelo seu próprio calendário, e as suas grandes festas pertencem à Igreja Ortodoxa Etíope Tewahedo — as arcas levadas à água no Timkat, a fogueira demera no Meskel e um Ano Novo de setembro cheio de flores amarelas.

O calendário civil oficial da Etiópia tem doze meses de trinta dias e um décimo terceiro mês de cinco ou seis, e o seu ano começa em setembro; as datas deste atlas são calculadas a partir dele. As suas festas mais conhecidas são celebrações da Igreja Ortodoxa Etíope Tewahedo, com procissões, sacerdotes que cantam e enormes reuniões públicas.
Duas delas estão inscritas na Lista Representativa do Patrimônio Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade da Unesco: o Meskel, memória do achado da Verdadeira Cruz, em 2013, e o Timkat, a Epifania etíope, em 2019.

At the end of the rainy season, Ethiopians commemorate the finding of the True Cross by lighting the demera — a great pyre decorated with yellow daisies — in Addis Ababa’s Meskel Square, where priests chant and dance before the patriarch sets it alight.

Ethiopia’s Orthodox Epiphany celebrates the baptism of Christ — on the eve, priests carry each church’s tabot, a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, to a river or pool; at dawn the water is blessed and sprinkled over hundreds of thousands, before the arks return home in dancing processions.
