L’Éthiopie compte le temps selon son propre calendrier, et ses grandes fêtes appartiennent à l’Église orthodoxe éthiopienne tewahedo — les arches portées jusqu’à l’eau à Timkat, le bûcher demera de Meskel, et un Nouvel An de septembre tout en fleurs jaunes.

Le calendrier civil officiel de l’Éthiopie compte douze mois de trente jours et un treizième mois de cinq ou six jours, et son année commence en septembre ; les dates de cet atlas en sont calculées. Ses fêtes les plus connues sont des fêtes de l’Église orthodoxe éthiopienne tewahedo, célébrées avec des processions, des prêtres qui chantent et d’immenses rassemblements.
Deux d’entre elles sont inscrites sur la Liste représentative du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’humanité de l’Unesco : Meskel, la commémoration de l’invention de la Vraie Croix, en 2013, et Timkat, l’Épiphanie éthiopienne, en 2019.

At the end of the rainy season, Ethiopians commemorate the finding of the True Cross by lighting the demera — a great pyre decorated with yellow daisies — in Addis Ababa’s Meskel Square, where priests chant and dance before the patriarch sets it alight.

Ethiopia’s Orthodox Epiphany celebrates the baptism of Christ — on the eve, priests carry each church’s tabot, a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, to a river or pool; at dawn the water is blessed and sprinkled over hundreds of thousands, before the arks return home in dancing processions.

The Ethiopian New Year arrives in September, as the rains end and hillsides turn yellow with adey abeba flowers — a day of church, family meals of injera and wat, and girls in new clothes going door to door with bouquets and the song “Abebaye hoy”.
