Etiopía cuenta el tiempo con su propio calendario, y sus grandes fiestas pertenecen a la Iglesia ortodoxa etíope Tewahedo — las arcas llevadas al agua en Timkat, la hoguera demera en Meskel y un Año Nuevo de septiembre lleno de flores amarillas.

El calendario civil oficial de Etiopía tiene doce meses de treinta días y un decimotercer mes de cinco o seis, y su año comienza en septiembre; las fechas de este atlas se calculan a partir de él. Sus fiestas más conocidas son celebraciones de la Iglesia ortodoxa etíope Tewahedo, con procesiones, sacerdotes que cantan y enormes reuniones públicas.
Dos de ellas están inscritas en la Lista representativa del patrimonio cultural inmaterial de la humanidad de la Unesco: Meskel, la conmemoración del hallazgo de la Vera Cruz, en 2013, y Timkat, la Epifanía etíope, en 2019.

At the end of the rainy season, Ethiopians commemorate the finding of the True Cross by lighting the demera — a great pyre decorated with yellow daisies — in Addis Ababa’s Meskel Square, where priests chant and dance before the patriarch sets it alight.

The Ethiopian New Year arrives in September, as the rains end and hillsides turn yellow with adey abeba flowers — a day of church, family meals of injera and wat, and girls in new clothes going door to door with bouquets and the song “Abebaye hoy”.
