As grandes festas do Peru pertencem aos Andes — a festa inca do sol reencenada em Saqsaywaman, uma peregrinação sob as geleiras, os santos de Cusco em procissão e semanas de dança à beira do lago Titicaca, onde festas católicas e crenças andinas há muito se entrelaçam.

As festas peruanas deste atlas vêm todas dos Andes do sul, em torno de Cusco e Puno. Muitas misturam o culto católico com crenças andinas mais antigas: a Virgen de la Candelaria é celebrada com símbolos da visão de mundo andina, e a peregrinação do Qoyllur Rit’i une a devoção católica ao culto de divindades pré-hispânicas da natureza.
Duas delas estão inscritas na Lista Representativa do Patrimônio Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade da Unesco: a peregrinação do Qoyllur Rit’i em 2011 e a festa da Virgen de la Candelaria de Puno em 2014.

On the feast of Corpus Christi, the parishes of Cusco carry fifteen images of saints and virgins into the Plaza de Armas, where they process with the cathedral’s gold and silver monstrance and then stay in the cathedral for a week — a Catholic feast shaped by centuries of Andean devotion and rivalry.

Every 24 June, Cusco stages the great sun festival of the Inca Empire — a procession from the temple of Qorikancha through the Plaza de Armas to the stone terraces of Saqsaywaman, with hundreds of performers, revived in 1944 from the accounts of a sixteenth-century chronicler.
