Las grandes fiestas del Perú pertenecen a los Andes — la fiesta inca del sol representada de nuevo en Saqsaywaman, una peregrinación bajo los glaciares, los santos del Cusco en procesión y semanas de danza a orillas del lago Titicaca, donde las fiestas católicas y las creencias andinas se entretejen desde hace siglos.

Las fiestas peruanas de este atlas vienen todas de los Andes del sur, en torno al Cusco y a Puno. Muchas mezclan el culto católico con creencias andinas más antiguas: la Virgen de la Candelaria se celebra con símbolos de la cosmovisión andina, y la peregrinación del Qoyllur Rit’i une la devoción católica al culto de deidades prehispánicas de la naturaleza.
Dos de ellas están inscritas en la Lista representativa del patrimonio cultural inmaterial de la humanidad de la Unesco: la peregrinación del Qoyllur Rit’i en 2011 y la fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria de Puno en 2014.

On the feast of Corpus Christi, the parishes of Cusco carry fifteen images of saints and virgins into the Plaza de Armas, where they process with the cathedral’s gold and silver monstrance and then stay in the cathedral for a week — a Catholic feast shaped by centuries of Andean devotion and rivalry.

Every 24 June, Cusco stages the great sun festival of the Inca Empire — a procession from the temple of Qorikancha through the Plaza de Armas to the stone terraces of Saqsaywaman, with hundreds of performers, revived in 1944 from the accounts of a sixteenth-century chronicler.
