Les grandes fêtes du Pérou appartiennent aux Andes — la fête inca du soleil rejouée à Saqsaywaman, un pèlerinage sous les glaciers, les saints de Cusco en procession et des semaines de danse au bord du lac Titicaca, où fêtes catholiques et croyances andines sont depuis longtemps entrelacées.

Les fêtes péruviennes de cet atlas viennent toutes des Andes du sud, autour de Cusco et de Puno. Beaucoup mêlent le culte catholique à des croyances andines plus anciennes : la Virgen de la Candelaria est fêtée avec les symboles de la vision du monde andine, et le pèlerinage du Qoyllur Rit’i joint la dévotion catholique au culte de divinités préhispaniques de la nature.
Deux d’entre elles sont inscrites sur la Liste représentative du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’humanité de l’Unesco : le pèlerinage du Qoyllur Rit’i en 2011 et la fête de la Virgen de la Candelaria de Puno en 2014.

Corpus Christi del Cusco
On the feast of Corpus Christi, the parishes of Cusco carry fifteen images of saints and virgins into the Plaza de Armas, where they process with the cathedral’s gold and silver monstrance and then stay in the cathedral for a week — a Catholic feast shaped by centuries of Andean devotion and rivalry.

Every 24 June, Cusco stages the great sun festival of the Inca Empire — a procession from the temple of Qorikancha through the Plaza de Armas to the stone terraces of Saqsaywaman, with hundreds of performers, revived in 1944 from the accounts of a sixteenth-century chronicler.
