Carnival Calabar

Five costumed bands compete along twelve kilometres of Calabar street between Christmas and New Year, in a carnival a state governor built from scratch in 2004 to see whether tourism could be an industry. It worked well enough that the state now shuts down for it.
A carnival with a founding date
Most carnivals cannot say when they started. This one can. Donald Duke, then governor of Cross River State, set up the modern Carnival Calabar in 2004 as a way of promoting tourism and putting money into the local economy — an explicit piece of policy, not a survival. There were carnivals in Calabar before independence, but they stopped during the civil war between 1966 and 1970, and what runs now dates from 2004.
It grew. For years it took up the whole of December; governor Benedict Ayade cut it back to two weeks after his election. The tourism bureau has put attendance at over 248,000 visitors.
The bands
The shape of it is a competition. Five principal bands take the route, each with its colour: Seagull in red, Passion 4 in green, Masta Blasta in orange, Bayside in blue, Freedom in yellow. Diamond and Calas Vegas compete too. Each band spends the year on costume and choreography and then spends a day proving it, in front of judges and a few hundred thousand people, over a route of twelve kilometres through the city.
The build-up is public. Dry runs are held from October onwards — a first in mid-October, a second in November, a final one in early December, then separate dry runs for the junior and the bikers' parades.
The last week of the year
The dates are published by the state. In the 2024 timetable the Cultural Carnival and the Carnival Kings and Queens were on 26 December, the Junior Carnival on the 27th, the main Carnival Calabar — billed as Africa's biggest street party — on the 28th, the Bikers Carnival on the 29th and the Street Party on the 30th. The 2026 schedule runs the same five days. The exact days do move: in 2025 the main parade went out on the 29th.
When it happens
The carnival festival runs through December; the main dates are 26 to 30 December, with the Cultural Carnival on the 26th, the Junior Carnival on the 27th and the main band parade on the 28th. Cross River State publishes the timetable each year, and it moves by a day or two.
