この地図に載る二つの祝日は、どちらも国の祝日であり、どちらもかたちを変えて「この国はどこから来たのか」を語ります。マタリキはマオリの太陰暦にしたがい、日付は毎年動きます。2022年からは、マタリキ諮問委員会が定めた六月か七月の金曜日が祝日となっています。2月6日のワイタンギ・デーは、1840年のワイタンギ条約を記念する日で、この条約は国の成り立ちを示す文書とみなす人が多くいます。
どちらも大行進の日ではありません。マタリキは亡き人を思い、食事を分かち合い、新しい年に目を向ける時です。ワイタンギ・デーには、ベイ・オブ・アイランズの条約締結の地で式典、演説、議論が行われ、全国のマラエ（集会の場）では一般公開が催されます。

New Zealand’s national day marks the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6 February 1840 between the British Crown and Māori chiefs — commemorated with a dawn service, speeches, kapa haka and waka on the harbour at the Treaty Grounds, and at times with protest and debate.

When the star cluster Matariki — the Pleiades — reappears in the pre-dawn sky of midwinter, Māori mark the beginning of a new year by remembering the dead, feeding the stars and looking ahead. Since 2022 it has been a public holiday in New Zealand.
