O Irã vive com três calendários ao mesmo tempo — o ano hégira solar que começa no Nowruz, o calendário hégira lunar das observâncias islâmicas e o gregoriano para o resto do mundo — e as suas festas se movem entre os três.

O ano oficial do Irã é solar. Começa no Nowruz, no equinócio de março, e os seus meses seguem as estações, razão por que festas como o Yalda, na noite mais longa do ano, permanecem na mesma época do ano gregoriano. As festas islâmicas, por sua vez, seguem o calendário hégira lunar e se antecipam cerca de onze dias a cada ano.
Com cerca de vinte e oito feriados, o Irã tem um dos calendários de festas mais cheios do mundo. As entradas abaixo começam pelas celebrações do ano iraniano.
مهرگان
The ancient Iranian autumn festival of Mehr — friendship, affection and the harvest. Tables are laid with pomegranates, apples and grapes, prayers are said, and there is music, dance and, in places, wrestling.

On the longest night of the year, families gather at the homes of their elders to stay up late around a table of pomegranates, watermelon, nuts and dried fruit, reading Hafez and telling stories until well after midnight.
