ブルガリアは年の初めを怪物とともに迎え、春の終わりを薔薇で送ります。一月、毛皮と鈴をまとった仮面のスルヴァカリがペルニク周辺で邪気を追い払い、六月にはカザンラク一帯の薔薇の谷が名高い精油用の薔薇を摘み、薔薇の女王を先に立てて練り歩きます。

この地図に載る二つの祭りは、ブルガリアの一年の両端にあります。ペルニク地方の民俗行事スロヴァは1月13日と14日に行われ、旧暦の新年を仮面行列で祝います。ユネスコは2015年にこれを無形文化遺産の代表一覧表に記載しました。薔薇祭は1903年にカザンラクで初めて開かれ、夏のはじめに薔薇の谷の町々でブルガリアの精油用の薔薇をたたえます。

On the nights of 13 and 14 January, masked survakari in fur, horns and heavy bells gather around fires in the villages of the Pernik region, then go from house to house marrying young couples in jest and wishing health for the new year — a masquerade listed by UNESCO.

At the start of June, the Rose Valley around Kazanlak celebrates the Bulgarian oil rose — pickers in folk costume gather blossoms in the gardens, rose oil is distilled for guests, and a Rose Queen leads a carnival procession of thousands through town.
