メキシコでは、先住民の暦とカトリックの暦が互いのなかへ根を伸ばしてきました。十一月には死者が家へ帰り、七月にはオアハカの諸民族が丘で踊り、一月には仮面のパラチーコスがチアパスの町をうめます。

メキシコの大きな祭りの多くは、先住民の伝えとカトリックの一年が出会う場所に立っています。死者の日は諸聖人の日と死者の日、そしてトウモロコシの収穫の終わりにあたります。オアハカのゲラゲッツァは古いトウモロコシの祭りとカルメンの聖母の祝日を結びつけます。パラチーコスは、土地の家々が彫った面をつけて、カトリックの聖人のために踊ります。

死者の日とパラチーコスはユネスコの無形文化遺産の代表一覧表に記載されています。そして三つの祭りはいまも何よりも共同体の行事であり、訪れる人のために整えられた見せ物ではありません。

Día de Muertos

At the turn of October and November, Mexican families welcome their dead home for a brief visit. They build altars with marigolds, candles and the departed’s favourite food, decorate graves, and in some towns keep vigil in the cemetery all night.
