元宵節の夜、台湾は島の南北の両端で祝います。北の平渓では願いを書いた天灯が山あいの空へ上がり、南の塩水ではヘルメットをかぶった人びとに向けて何千もの打ち上げ花火が放たれます。

旧暦一月十五日の元宵節は「小さな正月」とも呼ばれます。台湾交通部観光署は、その習わしを、神々を拝み、灯籠の謎かけを解き、団子を食べ、天灯を空へ放つこととして紹介しています。よく言われる言葉が、もっとも名高い二つの祝いを言い当てています。「北に天灯、南に蜂炮」。
この地図に載る二つの祭りはどちらも旧暦にしたがうため、二月のはじめから三月のはじめのあいだに巡ってきます。
鹽水蜂炮
On the 14th and 15th nights of the first lunar month, the palanquin of Guan Di, the god of war, tours the streets of Yanshui, and from doorways along the way racks of bottle rockets are fired towards it — and into the crowd in helmets that follows.
