この地図に載るエジプトの二つの祝いは、この国の暦の二つの面を見せます。シャム・エル・ネシームは国の祝日で、宗教を問わずエジプトの人びとが守ります。コプト正教会の計算による復活祭の翌週の月曜日にあたり、古代エジプトの春の祭りにさかのぼると広く信じられています。アブ・シンベルの太陽の日は、太陽そのものが決めます。2月22日と10月22日、朝のいちばん初めの光がラムセス二世の大神殿を通り抜け、最奥の至聖所にまで達します。

Twice a year, on 22 February and 22 October, the rising sun shines straight through the Great Temple of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel and lights the statues in its innermost sanctuary — an alignment that engineers preserved when the whole temple was moved in the 1960s.
